The state of Michigan consists of two peninsulas jutting out into four of the five great lakes. Lake Superior is to the north while Lake Huron wraps around two sides. Lake Michigan lies to the west, and Lake Erie is southwest of both peninsulas. Lake Ontario fills in most of the southeastern border with Canada.
Lake St. Clair lies directly north of Detroit and is considered a part of the Great Lakes system even though it isn’t technically a lake but rather an inland delta where the St. Clair River, which Lake Huron feeds, drains into Lake Erie.
The state’s most populous city, Detroit, is located in the southeast corner of Wayne County, near where the boundaries of four counties converge: Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and Wayne. This point also happens to be roughly in the center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

Detroit is an architectural wonderland with some of America’s most notable buildings just a short drive away! Take a trip down to Falling Water in western Pennsylvania and see what inspired Frank Lloyd Wright to create his most famous building, which is now open for tours.
